Interview With Gok Wan

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Gok Wan about his new collection for Specsavers. Here's how it went:

The previous collection was inspired by the 40s and 50s, what’s the inspiration behind the new collection?

It’s gone a bit earlier actually around 1938-42. It’s very strong and square and looks a bit more business-like which is why I like it. I want everybody to wear high collars and bows etc and feel a bit intimidated which I quite like.

What would you be looking for in this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year if you were judging?

Pulling off their glasses, which they obviously have to do, and confidence for me is key. I've dressed squillions of models over the years and it’s always the most interesting ones, not necessarily the most beautiful but the most interesting that I get a kick off. They fascinate me and you want to have lots of fun with them.

What do you see as interesting? Who do you think is the most beautiful person?

MY MUM!

Good answer!

My mum is the most beautiful person. I think Scarlett Johanson and Anne Hathaway are incredible but this is the beauty that we’re told about. There are lots of people that aren't stereotypically beautiful but you look at and think you have the most wonderful face; people like Sarah Jessica Parker. I think the Mona Lisa is stunning, although she’s a bit old news really. I think actresses are more beautiful than models because you get to know them a little bit.

Do you think glasses have made a come-back and transformed geek to geek-chic?

I do. I think glasses are really important now. I think glasses are at the highest fashion position they’ll ever be at. They were very functional in the 40s and 50s and not really available to the working class. Now they’re available to everyone and they can reinvent or invent or stimulate a certain fashion. I think it will be hard for glasses not to be fashionable any-more.

Do you think it will get to the point where there is nothing more you can do with them?

No. Oh my God, I think we've only just started. From designing my collection you start with a decade influence and then you look at new materials then you find a colour- there is so much stuff that you can do. Glasses are very 3-D too because of how they position themselves so there’s lots of things you can do with hidden colours and hidden textures. It’s all incredible.

Do you reckon you've helped a lot of kids out with going to school and wearing glasses?

Definitely, one of the first things I do whenever a young child of 4,5,6 comes up to me in the street with their mum and they’re wearing glasses, I comment on them and say their glasses are really cool. I've done that a few times and one time recently I said it and afterwards the mum started crying and mouthed ‘thank you’ and said all the kids bully her at school for wearing them.

I think you've help quite a lot of people with that.

I hope so.

For men and women wearing glasses, what do you think would complement their look?

I think a moustache!

What if you can’t grow one?

Well I can’t grow one either, have to make do with eye-liner  I like glasses to be juxtaposed against what you would generally do, so I love the idea of a ball gown or a full length evening gown and then whack on a massive pair of glasses. I love the idea of having bright orange, shocking hair then putting on yellow or red glasses. I like all the contradiction stuff so going against the rules we've been given for so many years. It really turns me on when you look at someone and think that’s hot. I love watching a woman put her glasses on…slightly sexual.

For next year’s spectacle winner of the year what would you advise candidates to get to be in with a better chance of winning?

Just be yourselves. We have such a mixture of people who come into the competition. People who are quite unusual looking- I think that’s great. So if you ever fancied yourself being in the limelight for one night only then just put yourself forward. What looks good is so varied.

What’s your favourite style era and what would you recommend for me, I’ll show you the glasses that I have…

I like the 20s and 30s. I like everything up to the 50s

(my glasses come out…)

I would NEVER EVER EVER have put you in those glasses. You've got like this bed-head shaggy hair, you've got piercing white teeth and bright orange lipstick clashing with your coral coloured jumper. You've got all these key style notes going on and then you whack on a really simple pair of glasses! You shocked me!

I've been told they’re my porn glasses.

They are slightly sexy secretary, I do like them but I would never ever imagine you pulling those out of your bag. For you, I would go for heavy structure that would kind of take over your eyes- you have a symmetrical brow bone too so I would have hidden those eyebrows and let your glasses be your real frame. I would go really big and I’d go for cream actually. I think a cream colour against your skin tone would look really unexpected. It’d look a bit ‘Downton’ actually.

From the old movies, who is your favourite glasses style icon? I really like Marilyn Monroe’s in ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’.

There’s a shot of Jane Fonda where she’s wearing a white shirt and a big pair of men’s glasses and that to me is just uber-sexy.

What about for guys?

Sidney Poitier actually. A really good looking strong leading man. He kind of changed the face of black men in film.  Spike Lee too. Really sexy, strong kind of fuck you I’m a geek.

You call your glasses your babies, could you choose a favourite?

No, I mean you would never let one of your children drown before the rest, therefore I couldn’t do it.

I was just checking if you were going to be a good parent or not.

A very good parent, I love them all and I love them all for different reasons.

You've helped so many women feel good about themselves, would you say that’s the biggest perk of the job? What makes what you do so worthwhile?

Yeah I think changing people’s lives. In a real kind of non-Jesus kind of way. Just allowing people to live a little bit happier. A lot of these women do change their lives. It brings them from the brink of depression into a state where they can feel at one with themselves. I love helping people. I get a real kick out of it.

Are you going to do any more ‘How to look good naked’?

Not at the moment, I've got a new fashion show coming out which is very similar. I think it will come back but we are having a break. We've made a lot, we made bloody eight series. I want it to rest for a while, I don’t want people to get bored of it because I’d hate that show to go. It was a complete phenomenon around the world and I was so lucky to be a part of it.

Upper Street

I am one of those frustrating shoppers who goes out with an exact idea of what I'm looking for; not because I've seen it or heard about it, just because I've woken up with an idea of something I want. Now, I'm going to be honest with you- 9 out of 10 times I am disappointed and have to settle!
Upper Street Shoes

A couple of ladies, with people like me in mind, have come up with a solution to this problem! Hurrah, I hear you (possibly) say! Upper Street allows you to design your own shoes from scratch. Now, I've had a go at doing this and as well as being super fun (who doesn't want to play designer?!) the shoes look fabulous. Plus, there will never ever be that embarrassing scenario when you turn up somewhere and someone is wearing your shoes! The phrase 'I love your shoes', will mean so much more!

Just imagine, instead of traipsing around the high street shops trying to find something like your dream shoe...you can sit at home with a glass of wine, telly on in the background and make your own. EXACTLY the way you want them and have them delivered to your door!

There are seven steps to making your perfect pair of shoes:
1) Shoe Style; ranging from pump, stiletto, court shoe etc
2) Upper Shape; classic, curvy
3) Shoe Front: swarovski crystal, bow, buckle, flower etc
4) Shoe Back: plain or counter back
5) Strap: ankle, triple strap etc
6) Colour
7) Embellishments

My shoe designed by me!
After producing a paper pattern of your shoe, the material is hand cut. Diamantes, gems and studs are added by hand. Master shoe-makers hand-fit the uppers. Experienced cobblers attach the leather inners, the sole and the heel. Then your shoes are hand-finished, buffed and polished. Boom! Needless to say, your shoes will be good hands.

Henrietta Ludgate; Afternoon Tea at LFW

What better than a little afternoon tea amidst the hysteria that is London Fashion Week. Scottish, luxury womenswear designer Henrietta Ludgate hosted the Super-nova Spring/Summer 2013 afternoon tea party.  This interactive experience was one-of-a-kind (much like Henrie's pieces). China cups and sauces, wine and tea poured by beautiful people, a live band and models wearing the new collection, dancing, blowing bubbles and generally just having a great time.

This was a show unlike any other I've been to. It was so relaxed and enjoyable. It's amazing how much difference it makes watching models wear their clothes in a natural habitat: dancing, socialising and laughing.

The atmosphere had a very Alice in Wonderland feel which was initially apparent by Henrie, dressed in pink with a matching top-hat, greeting members of the 'audience' at the door. Fairy lights, cup-cakes and large flowers also helped. It truly was an exciting and enticing way of viewing a collection.

Henrietta has been awarded the 'Fashion Innovation Award' and 'Young Designer of the Year' as well as being a favourite with Livia Firth and Laura Bailey, who incidentally helped open up her new store in Whiteleys, Bayswater. Which was another fun evening.

Henrie's designs are always bold, elegant and exciting. Have a look for yourself here:

Dirty Pretty Things Launch

In February (I know I’m very late) Dirty Pretty Things launched a pop up store in Selfridges. Lingerie designers Dee Murren and Claire Merry joined forces with jewellery designer Stephen Webster to create a limited edition range exclusive to Selfridges. Webster’s ‘envy’ pendant was added to Dirty Pretty Things’ bestseller ‘Eloise’ to create a stunning, one-off piece.

The launch took place in Selfridges, Oxford Street. The lingerie department played host to the pop-up shop and where the designers personally greeted guests whilst trays of champagne made their way around. There were also a couple of scantily clad models walking about in beautiful lingerie which, I’m sure, some of you will enjoy. Will promise  to not write up an event so late again… My bad!

Animal Charm Premiere

Last week (Tuesday 31st) I attended the international premiere of ‘Animal Charm’, a new film production by Talenthouse. The event took place at the incredibly stylish Wyld Bar in the W Hotel and was attended by many a fabulous person, such as the Director, Ben Charles Edward and leading ladies Sadie Frost and Sally Philips. As well as these two wonderful, British actresses, the film also included some impressive cameos from Michael Urie, Boy George and Jodie Harsh.

Sadie Frost

Animal Charm is A British, Indie, gothic, horror, black comedy, fashion film. I know that this sounds like a lot of genres for one short film, but honestly, that sentence is the best way to sum it up. Here’s a little blurb for you. Anne Thrope (Sadie Frost) is an ex fashion designer and a fur fanatic. She puts on a very tasteless, musical performance of Animal Farm, in the midst of which she is kidnapped by her long-time rival and old-time ‘frenemy’ Audrey Hoober (Sally Philips). Thrope proves not be the best behaved of hostages which results in some disturbing yet amusing scenes.

The night was a great success. The venue was perfect and I always enjoy being welcomed somewhere with a complimentary cocktail.

director Ben Charles Edwards
(who has a poster penis it would seem).

I really can’t urge you enough to go and see the film; I’m looking forward to seeing it again very soon. Ben Charles Edward is clearly a very gifted and talented director and writer ( he co-wrote Animal Charm with Dominic Wells) and Sadie and Sally were just brilliant. I don’t know if they’ve acted together before (I don’t think they have) but they just seemed to bounce off one another which made the funny scenes even funnier. Go and see it if ever you get chance. Loved it.

Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model

On the 30th January I was invited to go Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model. Of course I was super excited but also very nervous. What does one wear when they are going to be in the same room as Elle Macpherson and Britain and Ireland’s next potential super-model? It was a dilemma indeed. The day before I panicked ever so slightly and left the house a complete catastrophe after discarding clothes wherever there was space. However, (with a little help from my friends) I found an outfit.

Prince Cassius, Alex McDonald
and Camilla Gleditsch

We arrived at the destination slightly ahead of schedule so stood outside for a little bit until they were ready. It was very cold but they thoughtfully brought out tea and coffee to warm the cockles. We were also obliged to sign a confidentiality form (hence why you may find this blog slightly more vague than my usual).

Before we entered a camera crew came out, whilst I was having a brew, and interviewed us about our expectations of this season and if we thought the new winner could possibly be as wonderful as last year’s winner Jade Thompson- after seeing the girls, I’m optimistic!
Last year's winner
Jade Thompson

On entering the destination we were, very kindly, presented with a Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model bottle of Bucks Fizz. Not only this, I wasn’t frowned upon when, on leaving, I put one in my bag for later! We took our seats along the runway and waited for the show to start. We had time to fully take in our surroundings- I was rather surprised at the vast amount of kit (camera crews, lighting etc.). T’was very exciting.

Here is where it starts to get vague. The beautiful Elle Macpherson entered the room and took her pew at the end of the catwalk and the gorgeous finalists made their way down the catwalk and introduced themselves to everybody and Elle. I’ve already picked my favourites and can’t wait to see how they progress.
I had a wonderful day. This season is set to be very exciting, Make sure you watch!

Kipling's 25th Anniversary Party

Sara Reverberi photos
On Thursday 26th January I was invited to celebrate the 25th Anniversary Party of Kipling and the new global artist project ‘Play with Bags’.  The party was held at the fabulous ‘Hospital Club’ on Endell Street and was attended by the talented and glamorous. Guests included Amber Atherton (Made In Chelsea), Charlotte De Carle (Dirty Sexy Things), Prince Cassius and jewellery designer sensation Miranda McCarthy (of London Bird).

There were cocktails at hand on entering the venue, apple spritzers I believe they were, followed by strawberry beer. After this very warm welcome there was a free bar to ensure nobody went thirsty. We were also treated to gourmet burgers, chips and tiny waffles with chocolate sauce. I love being served with small, classic, British cuisine at parties- it really puts a lovely spin on the classic hors-d’ouvres.

We were entertained by celebrity DJs including T4’s Georgie Orkwell followed by Jade Williams and Sunday Girl. All-in-all there was a very eclectic mix with the DJs playing songs I haven’t heard for years- Brimful of Asha immediately springs to mind. I was heard to say ‘Oh my god, I love this song!’ on more than one occasion. Needless to say brilliant surroundings, free bar and great music guaranteed a buzzing atmosphere, lots of dancing and very happy guests.

It was an amazing idea to have a launch party collaborated with an art exhibition. Kipling has joined forces with eight artists; Belgian photographer Alex Salinas, Prince Lauder, Sarah Illenberger, contempory artist Li Wei, former French fashion stylist Vincent Gapaillard, US photographer Paul Graves, fashion photographer Rankin and Javier Mariscal who has recently been nominated for an Oscar. We were privy to some brilliant artwork which was definitely a talking point throughout the evening- everyone had a favourite.

On leaving the venue, we were presented with goodie bags which made me very happy. Inside them was a Kipling Classics purse/wallet, a box of chocolate Antwerp hands, a disposable camera and a lovely pink and white USB storage device with some Kipling information on it (which incidentally helped me write this piece).
Kipling’s 25th Anniversary party was a massive success. Thank you Kipling and thank you Surgery PR for a great night. Here’s to the next 25 years!
